ABOUT US...

Preventable injuries are the number one killer of children ages 14 and under in the United States and Tennessee.

In 1999 a coalition of social service agencies, law enforcement agencies, health and safety professionals, business owners, and civic groups was formed in Knoxville to accomplish a common mission: reduce unintentional injuries among children from birth to age 14 who live in our area.

With the support of the National SAFE KIDS Campaign, the coalition works to identify local injury trends affecting children in the greater Knox area. The coalition then coordinates specific prevention activities directed towards reducing these injuries. (see "prevention activities" below)

Although support comes from many National and local sources, our volunteers are our greatest and most effective resource, so...

SAFE KIDS Coalition meetings are held the 4th Tuesday
of every month from 8:30 am - 10:00 am at
East Tennessee Children's Hospital.

PREVENTION ACTIVITIES
Injury Patterns are always changing and coalition activities will change to accommodate these areas which may include water safety, poison prevention, choking prevention, and scald burn prevention. Based on our local injury data, the SAFE KIDS coalition of the Greater Knox Area will always focus on at least these 3 particular injury prevention areas:

CHILD PASSENGER SAFETY

FALLS AND TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY PREVENTION

  • Bicycle and wheeled sports safety events
  • Distribution and fitting of helmets
  • Distribution of fall prevention educational materials

PEDESTRIAN SAFETY

  • Walk Our Children to School Day held every October
  • Distribution of Pedestrian Safety educational materials
